Our intern Amelia Richardson reports on our action-packed day in the sun in Margate, where we ventured, family in tow, on Sept 1st.

Summer is approaching an end and autumn is dawning, which for most evokes images of pumpkin spiced lattes, crunching leaves, and shortening nights. However, for those in the Profile office it means Wayzgoose!

A ‘Wayzgoose’ was once an entertainment given by a master printer to his workmen each year on or about St Bartholomew's Day, a tradition that stems all the way back from 1456, when the printing of the Gutenberg Bible was completed. It marked the traditional end of summer and the start of the season of working by candlelight. Now, the word describes an annual outing and dinner for the staff of a printing works (or in our case, a publishing house).

While this longstanding ritual has been largely forgotten throughout the publishing industry, Profile has brought it into the 21st Century by creating an excuse for the team to gallivant off to the seaside for the day and have a big lunch together. Profile’s Wayzgoose tradition now spans over two decades, travelling from Brighton, to Oxford and even to the Isle of Wight. Our trip this year was to Margate, a place dubbed ‘The Original Seaside’, and despite London’s recent tumultuous gales, we were blessed with glorious weather on the seafront, with staff and interns alike taking a dip in the shimmering south-eastern sea. Margate delivered both the charm of a retro coastal town, as many of us giddily explored the newly-renovated Dreamland, and artistic treasures such as the Turner Contemporary gallery and the eerie Shell Grotto.

Families get to join the party too, so partners and kids of all ages tagged along to the beach, bringing boundless energy and laughter – it wasn’t just the parents who were exhausted at the end of the trip! The day was as entertaining as the word ‘Wayzgoose’ itself, which most likely stems from the phrase 'harvest goose', a bird historically eaten at a similar time of year. Although we didn’t quite manage to roast a large fowl for the occasion, our dinner and drinks overlooking the seashore was good enough for us.
