SENIOR COMMISSIONING EDITOR/EDITORIAL DIRECTOR, PROFILE BOOKS

We are an award-winning independent publisher looking for an experienced commissioning editor to join the team, primarily acquiring serious non-fiction.

We’re looking for someone smart and creative who will enjoy the freedom and entrepreneurial spirit of independent publishing. You’ll have lots of ideas for books that drive conversations, authors who are stars in the making and thought-provoking, compelling and diverse subjects from science to politics, and the experience to know how to pursue them from pitching and proposal through to publication. Great author care, agent contacts and knowledge of the non-fiction market are essential too.

We pride ourselves on being an outstanding place to work and a supportive team, driven by a love of readers, writers and ideas.

This role is London-based. We are currently working to a hybrid home/office model. Competitive salary dependent on experience. Benefits include 25 days holiday (rising to 30 days with length of service) plus bank holidays, pension, life insurance, annual bonus scheme for all employees, working day 9.30am – 5.30pm Monday-Friday with flexible working agreements by arrangement.

HEAD OF MANAGING EDITORIAL

Profile Books is a prestigious independent publisher of books of the highest quality, home to world-class thinkers and emerging talent based in Greater London.

We are looking for an experienced managing editor to direct the editorial management of our publishing programme, with responsibility across our imprints.

This is an opportunity to help shape the running of a busy and varied pre-press department as you see manuscripts from handover to print-ready files, maintaining the highest of editorial standards.

You will be

  • confident managing complex projects, including illustrated titles, calmly and expertly negotiating all the processes along the way.
  • Currently a copy-editor and proofreader with excellent organisational skills and be good at prioritising your workload and that of the wider team.
  • an experienced manager
  • an effective communicator with colleagues and authors.

You will be responsible for the editorial integrity of our covers and marketing materials, ensuring house style is always followed.

Within the role you will manage a managing editor and an assistant managing editor, and be responsible for liaising with our existing freelance copy-editors, proofreaders, indexers and project managers in addition to establishing new relationships.

You will have a key role at the heart of our publishing programme, and will be able to work constructively and creatively with the Editorial, Design and Production departments in particular, as well as with authors. Working with the Pre-press and Production Director in developing the department and streamlining our processes and practices as our lists grow and develop.

Salary range £40,000–£47,500 per annum depending on experience.
